Amanda Brugel

(February 27 2010 - Toronto ON) Pointe Claire is a secluded community in this part of the island of Montreal called the West Island. It is a bit of a mystery as the West Island can be confusing to those unfamiliar with its meaning. They often believe it's an island located west of Montreal however it is actually a part of the city. West Island encompasses everything between the cities of Lachine and West. Amanda Brugel grew up on this island, and it is often referred to as her birthplace. However, she only was there for a brief time. Brugel was raised in Courtice near Oshawa, Ontario. In her early years, she wanted to be a performer but an unexpected growth spurt made it impossible. In an article from The Toronto Star she admitted In heels, I'm 6 feet one inch. When I grew out of my male dancers, I decided to quit. Former dancers often turn to acting and in the instance of Brugel, it was a suggestion from her high school teacher of drama. She was encouraged to take part in an audition in her school's production. Following a trial her options, she was eventually the leading lady for Anne of Green Gables. The Fine Arts Talent Scholarship led her to York University, where she completed her studies in Theatre and graduated with the Bachelors in Fine Arts in the year 2000. Brugel's career spans over 20 years and she's been in over 60 productions including big screen productions as well as smaller screens. Her most recognizable role was the one of Rita (pictured in the below photo) in the television show The Handmaid's Tale. Brugel, the only Canadian on the season 1 The Handmaid's Tale cast as well as appearing only on occasion, was the sole Canadian.
